Nokia N900 review 2: Email & Battery

Category: Original, Skill, Author: Jonah, Popularity: 2% [?]

Using N900 as life phone and work tool for more than 3 days! It's the first 3 days to use it as an entire phone on hand, i just leave my Nokia E71, BB 8310 curve on one side.

Emails:

N900 is amazing and super in communication! Spending much time to find Google apps hosted email tool without good lucky, using the default pop3, smtp setting is too pain, it takes more than 3 days or even more days to get all my emails down, so i just canceled it.

Finally, i found Nokia Messaging service/client inside N900(it's not easy for everyone to list out Nokia Messaging in the E-mail service provider list, but i guess everyone can do this via trying hard rest the phone or input sim card or pull out sim card then again, or reboot the phone, you may find the Nokia Messaging there, be patience, you can get there, it deserves your trying and waiting), now come back to Nokia Messaging, it's similar as BB's push mail method, very nice.

Pro:

  • really steady, really quick, sometimes it's quicker than the Google Apps Gmail webmail in PC to get an email (even though when you come from office to home when you not have connections, it may takes some time to establish connection, and trying to access the server then it takes much time, but when connected it's very steady)
  • Strait on homescreen with sound, vibration, lighting, pop up window to hint, even though you close it, this is better than Gmail client on E71.

It's amazing as Blackberry's push mail, you can trust me!

Cons(shall not be cons, but the tips i explored for you :) ):

  • You shall get a Nokia Messaging id first, it's not easy to get all the things done when you saw my this article :) , you may make all the smtp fields unchecked and blank to send emails. This is the tip! To be detail: you need set this at the Nokia server not yr phone, then in your phone you need input two password, caution in this! then even you do everything right, you may still can not send email, then you may reboot the phone, so everything comes to be OKAY!
  • With Nokia Messaging, you can not keep the sent email in the Gmail system, it means you can not track all yr emails in one place, and the Nokia messaging normally can keep 3 days' information, even though you can set up for long time, but the the start point of accessing the email will be slow.
  • You can not read the message as thread mode as very famous in Gmail, all the emails line as time line.
  • Can not quote Gmail's contacts automatically, when you want send to a new contact. But you can use N900's contacts app, in this section you can email and related the Nokia Messaging - Yr Gmail, Google Email, Yahoo Email... these accounts as automatically flow.
  • Not support wap, it's too bad, the only bad point i think of N900, it means you can not access some Chinese Bank site with phone.

Still, i can use the webmail even chat in the Gmail web page. So in the webmail, i can do anything as in PC though it's not so smooth as in PC(still, it's very smooth :) ). I use Google Apps hosted Gmail webmail on N900 when i want to send a group email or search my emails.

So use N900, i can do even better than in my E71's email system with original Google gmail client.

Battery, one day 24 hours consuming 70%:

  • 20 sms
  • 5-7 calls, 20 minutes in all
  • receiving more than 300 emails with sound and vibration on
  • write 10 emails
  • 30 minutes' MP3 with wifi to access online Google Music China [the super function i find on N900, no phones can do this! The same function as watch Youtube, but normally the phones can watch youtube, cuz the client is mobilized or optimized]

How do you value this? i think it's pretty nice and cool!

In all, N900 is still super and rocking! The Review II is the most important part of my decision whether to use a phone. And in a word: N900 is my 30 hours mobility notebook and phone :)

    hi, tks for posting here.
we are familiar with this. we have 2 N900, mine is okay to get Nokia messaging service listed, and it's for me, not every time i can get this out, when i shift my sim card, then the nokia messaging is lost, when i insert another sim card, and reboot the phone, then i may get out the nokia messaging out.
so the tips is that: you shall trying with different sim card, and reboot in different time. now i m lucky and steady to use two sim cards, and each can refresh the nokia messaging out.
even in one sim card, when you try with reboot, or phone re-set, it may also list the nokia messaging out. it's my experience, i can not tell why.
can you get what i mean?

for the 2nd N900, it's ordered from Amazon USA store, my colleague firstly can not list it out, but later he not tried it more, so i can not give an very clear confirmation.

Please let me know if u are able to know any other solution.

PS: Firmware is latest 51 which i flashed using NSU.

hi, to make the nokia messaging service listed, the sim card inserted is need!

mine is 1.2009.44-1.003, yours is 51, mine is 44.

i think the newer os shall easily to get the nokia messaging out. but i will try with .51 os version as well, my colleague using a .51 and has problem in wifi networking problem.
i will reply you within one day.

as for my former experience: try to fresh the nokia messaging, the sim card must be insert, when one sim card is insert, you can try it for 1st time, if it fails, then you can try it again by turn of gsm on and off, then go into mail setting again. if you still no lucky, then use same sim card again with reboot the phone, with a new route.

the road map is really tricky, hard, but this may success. and Nokia still have no official answer in this.

but most people can use this Nokia messaging, and it's really nice.

still nokia messaging is not good in sim card, eg for me, i have 2 sim cards, when i change it to another sim card, the nokia messaging is lost, and you have to install it again, it's sth like BlackBerry's service book, each sim card relate with an operator's service book, it will search this 'service book' firstly before loading the Nokia messaging, so you may try with China, Usa, Uk sim card, or other local operator's sim card, if you have this resources.

Well i tried changing the sim by another provider.. infact the other sim which tried now i have used nokia messaging with tat on nokia 5230 and 97 mini so am not new to nokia messaging. Have tried multiple reboots, sim removal and all methods nothing seems to work :(

Have asked a friend who came from Australia to get his sim so lets see if that work. Ideally it shouldnt be sim dependent...but lets see how that goes.

yes, i can tell you are very familiar with Nokia phones and Nokia Messaging, so the sim card problem shall not be the problem. so i think the firmware and N900 it self is the problem.

however, since Nokia 5230 xm and N97 have to install the nokia messaging, so you can get the nokia messaging list out for sure. and it is default build in at N900, and it's called as: service, so it not guarantee that the nokia messaging service in E-mail account.

well well, i'd have to say: CHEERS!!!
i think it's really strange that Nokia messaging appears trial or paid with this kind method on your phone.
    it shall be free.
so when you use same id on your N97 or other S60 3rd models, it may not has this kind issue is it?

however, i can guess Nokia Messaging will be free and paid when they got many many users.
now, NM is really nice for instant email reading and reply. still it's not so well as Gmail Client on phone when you need an entire operation, such as thread read, search, contact quote. i guess a paid version NM may cover this issue, then NM may super!

and one small but important thing shall attention:
changing sim card in phone will make the NM lost, and you have to set up again with the new sim card.
so now when i want to pull a card out, i will not insert a new sim instead, it means i will not use a new sim card in phone for shifting.

it seems only our MMMOOO who doing mobile product and service will shift sim cards in different phones :)

    just a share!
